I have never made notes on any of the pubs I have visited, but it is an area I intend to develop. The listed pubs are those which stand out in my memory, and I would love to visit them again, or ones I have visited in the past few weeks.
Costello’s, Altrincham – They will let you buy 3 third pints in order that you can find the beer you prefer without costing too much. Good prices, relaxed atmosphere, and great beer.
The Brewery Tap, Chester – Beautiful building with excellent beers.
C’est What?, Toronto – Easy to miss from the outside, but inside it is great. An underground bar based in a cellar, it has a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The beers are excellent both in range and quality.
Delirium Cafe, Brussels – A must visit for the beer lover. 15 beers on tap and a daily menu of 150 bottled beers all served in their correct glass. The annual menu is worth buying as a keepsake. The 2015/16 version has details of 3162 beers.
C K Browar, Krakow (website in Polish) – This subterranean microbrewery offers beer tasting with 5 small samples for a very reasonable price. As well as serving beer by the pint, they do 6-pint test tubes which are brought to the table. Whilst more expensive than other bars in the area, they offer a unique experience. They also offer vodka tasting.
Closer To Home:
The Boat House, Wylam – An excellent array of beers and ciders on offer. The beers on offer change on a regular basis and it is easy to see why it has won so many CAMRA awards. They now do Thai food. I visit this pub on a regular basis.
Wor Local, Prudhoe – Just opened in 2016. 4 beers on draught, but all are well researched and keenly priced. A relaxed atmosphere – no TV, no jukebox, no pool table – just good old fashioned conversation with locals. Well worth a visit. I visit this pub on a regular basis.
The Lambton Worm, Chester-Le-Street – A lovely place to be. The story of The Lambton Worm adorns the walls. The staff are welcoming and the beers on offer from Sonnet 43 are really worth trying. Sonnet 43 have rebranded their beers therefore my notes don’t yet reflect their new names. My pick of the beers is Seraphim, a citrus blonde beer. Visited April 2016.
The Stables, Beamish – Beautiful surroundings, excellent food and healthy portion sizes. Good selection of beers, my favourite being Silver Buckles, which outsells all other beers on offer by 2:1. There’s an interesting story behind ‘Cossack Cask’ involving a Russian entrepeneur. I visit this pub on a regular basis.
sixdegreesnorth,Glasgow. Visited June 2017. Excellent food, really good beer. You can try a beer bat – 3 beers for £4.50.
The Samson Inn, Gilsland, Northumberland. Visited June 2017. Excellent food, a choice of 4 local beers on tap. They allow you a small taste before making your selection.
The Ship Inn, Low Newton by the Sea. Visited June 2017. Lovely location. Visited by The Prince of Wales in 2012. I’ve visited twice and found the beer to be so-so. They only provide food on certain nights.
The Thin White Duke, Carlisle. Visited June 2017. Excellent food, good beer. Staff were very helpful.
